Vietnam Airlines has resumed flights to Cambodia's Siem Reap airport after one of its Airbus 320 skidded off the runway, causing a 12-hour closure, an official said Wednesday

The airport was re-opened this morning for light passenger planes, the official from Vietnam’s national flag carrier said.

Vietnam Airlines, therefore, will use regional airliners ATR-72 on the Ho Chi Minh City-Siem Reap route, he said, while passengers from Hanoi will be flown to HCMC first before heading to Siem Reap, he added.

He also informed that Vietnam Airlines would increase the number of daily flights on the route from five to eight.

Siem Reap airport is the gateway to Cambodia’s famed Angkor Wat.

On Tuesday, a Vietnam Airlines Airbus 320 slid off the runway as it turned to taxi to the terminal after landing in heavy rain.  No passengers or crew were harmed.

Vietnam Airlines has coordinated with airport and Cambodian authorities to move the aircraft, the official said
